Thara was born on Tatooine to a scavenger family, and orphaned a year after Zakuul’s attack, her family killed in tusken raid. Her force sensitivity surfaced during the incident, and Jedi master Farad Tanen, who was working on Tatooine after the Order scattered, found her and started teaching her.
She did not show much progress in the Force studies but learnt to use a blade, and received some general education. Her best grades in the catch-up exams were in maths and physics, and lowest in grammar and history.
When Master Tanen was killed in a duel with Lord Galan, a human sith lord, Thara was enraged and her grief and anger took over as she tried to fight the lord. Why he decided to spare her life is not known. Thara was taken captive and after a year of service near the lord she was dropped on Korriban for training. The name Sand was given to her when she was enlisted, referring most likely to her origin.
Her results on Korriban show no great skill and she was always barely making it through her trials. What happened during her final task in the tomb she was sent to with two other acolytes is unknown but she was the only one to emerge, battered but alive. The lord enlisting her died during the time she was studying at the academy so she was sent to house Horuset to report in and was accepted as a household acolyte.
