Operations; an explanation
An Introduction
In an effort to both inspire more free roleplay between members as well as create systems in which members stimulate their own roleplay to allow officers to run slightly fewer (Say 2-3 a week) events but far more interesting ones that are more inclusive and enjoyable for everyone; we have found a new event style that we hope should do both of these things. With many thank yous to M'alacor and Kiyosa, who are the original creators of this idea and graciously allowed us to use it, we present Operations - a new event style for a modern guild.
What is an Operation ICly?
Our resident Darth, as well as our Lords of the Sith and even the Sith themselves, all have vast workloads that span the entire Empire as they go about their responsibility in pressing forward our eternal task of wiping the Jedi and the Republic from the face of the galaxy. However, they are but single beings and even with the aid of apprentices to their skill many find they simply cannot cover every task presented and still focus on their own self. Because of this they have started (Or will start) to produce missions to post on the Horuset servers that agents of our will (Be it Imperial or Sith) are capable of signing up for and then carrying out. Once a team is assembled here they will then meet in person and organise when they will strike out to complete their task. Of course all missions are time sensitive, so, be sure to get all of this done before the deadline or face the wrath of the operation giver!
What is an Operation OOCly?
An operation is a new event style which passes the torch of GMing everything from us (Your officers and sub-officers) to you (The members) as well. What we will do is alongside fully GMed and planned events that you know and love, we will also be generating these missions which you guys will then sign up for and once an acceptable team size is assembled it will be then down to you to organise when and how before carrying out your plan. In this way we hope you guys do three things; firstly that you RP outside of any small cliques a little more, secondly that you guys gain the skills needed to inspire your own RP and finally that you guys keep looking at and using this site as well as just in game. Overall we feel this will give you a new lease of life in RP as well as us more time to focus on the guild itself instead of worrying that we need to have lots of events everyday.
Yes, but how do I do an Operation?
I'm glad you asked, because right now I am going to go through - step by step - exactly how one would sign up for and then take part in an Operation.
Finding an Operation: So, right here in the Ongoing Operations section, there will be a number of threads (That number will be constantly changing) which will have on them information ICly about what the Operation is. An intro into the story behind the event, the details of the IC location this Operation will be set as well as OOC info of the ingame location to be used and the area that can be accessed. Alongside this the primary and secondary objectives will be outlined and then a time limit will be given as well as a party size limit. Some nice operation givers might even give you IC connections to support you can call in. With all of that info you (The players) will decide if your character is going to enlist in that Operation and, if so, you will post an IC reply to the thread doing so. Not much is needed here, a basic holo recorded message accepting the call to arms is just fine. However, what you will also include is whether you (OOCly) would be willing to GM this operation. This does not mean you would be unable to be there ICly, all it does is tell the rest of the party forming who would like to be the GM for that operation.
Making the Party: So you've signed up to an operation and even said you would GM it, that's great! Your job now is kind of to wait, of course you are fully IC aware of the Operation you just signed up for so you can reference it in RP to your heart's content, but before you can go and do it you want a party to form on the Operation thread. But, once it does, you will have a list of people you will be working with as well as a list of people who would happily GM. It is then all down to you. Organise ICly a meeting between you to outline a plan, as well as talk OOCly to discuss who will GM this event. Once you are all on the same terms of who your GM is and when you will be running this event (Be sure to reference our calendar here on Enjin to fit it around organised guild events!) then you are all set to go.
Running the Operation: And go you must! Off to that location ICly, where - overseen by your GM - you try and complete the task to the best of your ability and complete all the objectives you want to. The GM themselves will be more than welcome to contact the Operation giver to get some pointers and ideas, but the main idea is this event is Gmed by you guys for you guys. That being said, we include a GM because these operations will not be a walk in the park. People can get wounded, badly, as well as missions being failed. Accept the good with the bad and love the journey.
After the Operation: Whether it went perfectly and your crack team of experts pulled off the Operation without a hitch, or one of you tried to trip up another which hurled the whole Operation to the dogs and now you are looking at a mission failed as well as missing a finger and a foot, it doesn't matter because you report back ICly to the person who gave you the Operation. From there, it's all IC because OOCly you just finished the Operation. You pat each other on the back and we hope you'll be looking to do another Operation again soon.
But what about...?
I know, I know, you almost certainly have questions and if you have any at all please bring them to any of the Officers and we will elaborate to you exactly how it works. That being said here is some questions answered that I could think off the top of my head.
Can an acolyte sign up to an Operation? Of course, they are just as eligible as anybody else. However, to step foot officially off Dromund Kaas, Korriban or the Imperial fleet they must receive permission to do so from either the Lords of the House or Darth Horuset himself. Keep that in mind.
What if I never want to GM? There is no requirement for you to ever be a GM in these events, we will not be counting the number of times you GM to the number of times you don't. But, I think everyone would be deeply saddened if you just decided from the get go that you never would. These tasks are for small teams and the perfect place for anybody to start, practice or just enjoy, GMing an event. As stated earlier it does not mean you can't be there as well ICly taking part, it just means you are taking the responsibility of running the event for others.
In my own opinion GMing, whilst harder than just attending, is deeply satisfying as you get to greatly improve your own writing as well as demonstrate a fantastic commitment to helping our community run and develop some real independence and confidence that allows for a greater depth and breadth of roleplay outside of the Operations. As well as this it allows you to better understand what we go through when we GM the much larger events so that we never get a situation where you misunderstand or we badly portray what is going on.
I want to GM but I am scared to, what do I do? Talk to someone. It is great that you want to GM, and we love that, but if you aren't sure how we have a team of fantastic officers, sub-officers and members all who have a wild variation of GM experience who can give you pointers as well as tricks to make your GMing top notch. But don't worry, we all start rusty, it is a new experience and skill so don't be afraid to make a mistake. It is how we learn.
I still don't really get it. I'm so confused. Not a question, but, a valid point nonetheless. The answer is come and talk to us, we are happy to do a step by step explanation using screen share and voice explanations to run you through how this will work. During the Operation itself? You have your GM so you'll have guidance there to look to.
Can Imperials mix and match with Sith? Of course they can. Our Imperials, whilst part of the machine of the Imperial military forces, are also capable of being placed on missions as one off jobs. They will be (In the eyes of the Operation giver) a tool who is capable of very different things which can provide a great dynamic. Going up against a force sensitive? That Imperial is going to blend in, in the force, to the force sensitives lackeys whereas Sith will stick out like a sore thumb. Need to splice a computer or conduct field medic work? I know Yutal can't, I doubt many Sith can yet that is bread and butter work for some Imperials. Everybody is equally valuable.
Who can make Operations? In theory everybody can make an Operation, however, these posts are IC and so an acolyte or low ranking Imperial will likely not get any attention since they are not very important. However, if you OOCly want to make an OPS - I encourage you to do so - then it also means you have the IC fun of trying to perhaps find a patron to support the Operation ICly and thus add to the authority of what you post. If you do want to make an Operation, then I will post the BBcode skeleton that has fast become our general aesthetic.
A final word
Now, whilst we trust and love each and every one of you, there is one final point I must go over and that is etiquette. We are putting our trust in you, as members, to run these Operations and manage yourselves because you have earned that trust. We believe you to be respectful, intelligent and good people. However, we will still be overseeing these by getting feedback and reviews. If we find that people are griefing their GMs, abusing them or just in general being disrespectful in these events then we will act with the fiery vengeance that our rank affords us. There will be no excuses. Just because your GM might be a member like you, they are THE authority in the event and their word is final on outcomes etc. Don't like a decision? That's fine, have an open and friendly conversation, but do not question every bad thing that happens and respect that if your GM does not change their mind then you must accept it.
Conversely, if you feel your GM is totally mishandling your event to a point that you and your party are unrealistically in danger of things like character death or that there is a mishandling of what you are facing then bring this to an officer and we will step in to resolve this. But, do not bring us every single gripe. We don't care that unfortunately you didn't manage to shoot someone one time, we care if your GM decides that you got shot between the eyes the moment you walk around a corner and then tell you your character is dead.
We hope you enjoyed this explanation and see you taking part in these Operations right away, remember, any questions at all can be brought to the officers! Finally please try not to host your Operations on the days of other events, we understand people are busy but most of the week is dedicated to free RP and we give plenty of time to complete them. We want as many people attending guild events as possible!
