The following Essay is submitted by Acolyte Winasaki.
The role of the Apprentice is to be forged into something greater, worthy of bearing power. The chain that binds them to their Master is not one of slavery, but of tempering. Through service to their Master, an Apprentice is strengthened until they are worthy to bear power themselves. To reject the chain too early is weakness, but to never seek to break it is even weaker. A flame that is too weak tempers nothing; a flame that burns without restraint leaves only ash.
The role of the Apprentice is not the same as an Apprentices Duties. What is equally important for an Apprentice is not what is taught, but what they must do. An Apprentice may have additional duties beyond that to their Master in service of the House or the Empire. Knowing which duty takes precedence is a judgement every Apprentice must master.
The first duty of an Apprentice is to advance the Will of their Master, and through them, The Empire. They are the voice that speaks their Master's words, the hand that carries out their will, and the mind that judges when action is required. But an Apprentices role is not purely obedience. The role of the Apprentice is to seize knowledge and opportunity, influence and allies. A Master may provide guidance, but the role of the Apprentice is to pursue that. The Apprentice learns not only from the fire placed before them, but from the embers left behind by every Master they observe. Not merely what their Master teaches them and has them experience, but in what other Masters teach their Apprentices and conversely, what they do not teach.
An important role for the Apprentice is also the protection of their Master. This doesn’t mean physically, although there will be an element of such when required. It is about protecting their Masters interests and their time. A Lord of the Sith does not have the time to respond to every request, every question. And those requests and questions may be laced with ulterior intention. It is the role of the Apprentice to screen these and to, at their Masters discretion, resolve such matters before they burden their Master. Their role is to ensure their Masters attention is reserved only for matters of true worth. This isn’t to say, however, the Master shouldn’t be aware of these matters.
The ultimate role of the Apprentice is to further the Masters Legacy. They will inherit their Masters knowledge, strength, contacts, secrets, and unfinished business. Even when an Apprentice ascends to the rank of Lord, they remain a reflection of the one who forged them. Their fate will forever be entwined with their Master, and this is a bond that once forged can never truly be broken. It persists even beyond death. An apprentice who seeks only to preserve their Masters Legacy has misunderstood it. The greatest honour they can pay to their Master is not to imitate them, but to transcend them. To undergo a transformation is the role, and Legacy is the result.
To conclude, the role of the Apprentice is to be a forge made flesh for their Masters. To pass on knowledge and strength to the next generation. To stand as proof of the Masters strength and philosophy. To protect their Masters time and interest. To stand as the Legacy of their Master. For when the Master falls, only the Apprentice remains to prove whether their teachings were worthy of remembrance
