What are Prestige Powers?
Prestige powers are newly added changes to some ability trees to reduce the grind and offer more flavour to those who dedicate themselves to particular abilities. This allows for smoother transitions as your character grows in power, rather than having to learn an entirely separate ability.
To learn a prestige power, you will need the prerequisite power at 3 (Expert). The first 3 (Expert) can be learned at 5d6, and more once 6d6 and above are reached. You can work towards earning that first Expert ahead of time, so when you reach that 5d6, you're ready to go.
For example: Force Fear and Force Horror. Under the old system, you would need to first meet the prerequisite for Fear, then earn a lesson in it, use it until at least 3 (Beginner), and then earn a lesson in Force Horror and do the same. No longer! Now, if your Fear reaches 3 (Expert), you receive Force Horror at 3 (Expert) for free! You are very scary, well done. Force Horror would be added to your sheet in the same bar where Force Fear currently resides.
You do not need a prestige power to learn abilities further into the tree. If you just want to have your Force Barrier at 3 (Adept) and never push it further, you could still learn Mental Barrier but not know Force Protection until that Force Barrier gets to 3 (Expert). Prestige Powers are not a prerequisite to other abilities, but an addition to abilities already learned. This ensures people are not bottlenecked or restricted in their journey to become stronger Sith.
