An analysis of my sparring combat against Sith Mitina.

#1
An analysis of my sparring combat against Sith Mitina.By Apprentice Tutam

Introduction
Obvious signs of progress are much like the snows of Orsus. They are unpredictable and you can spend many a day seeing none of them but when it snows, it flurries. In this past week I have slaughtered dozens of Republic Soldiers, fought a Jedi and at long last the war on Orsus is over. I am not alone in my thankfulness for leaving that civilization forsaken planet alone as it seems that all I talk to are relieved to return to the the Capitol. A change of pace unusual to me, given my departure from there some six years ago now. But this is no place to wax philosophical. My first spar on the flagship as a Sith and what I feel is more than a snowflake of improvement. The foe for this was my Master, Mitina, though perhaps for the first time since I have known her unarmored. I have chosen to wear my armor for now, given the activity and the journey home, though I confess I miss the feeling of normal clothing, far lighter and quicker to move in.
This spar, which began as a Shien Lesson, was another opportunity for me to attempt to impress her with my progress. Since earning the rank of apprentice I have worked tirelessly towards self improvement, including the learning of Djem So as a dueling form. Shii Cho although basic has proved a useful skill but the second variety of the fifth form suits me far more. The heavy blade work and the dogged aggression, pushing forward against a foe with all the intention of dominating them and controlling the fight suits me to a tee. In this fight as detailed below I have attempted to adapt my technique to service a particular goal when fighting a certain foe. It was not fully successful, but I feel that this is an avenue worth exploring.
The Fight
For the first time, I was not given an opportunity to begin the spar and in many ways I am thankful. In the real world I will not be given such an opportunity to always begin and it shows a hopeful recognition of my improvement that I am not coddled into such. Mitina begin with a fast horizontal strike into my right shoulder before I was given time to assume an opening stance. Given the stance she assumed and the aggressiveness of her assault, I am lead to believe this a Juyo styled attack. My response was not one born of Djem So, but of the force jumping technique that I have recently gained some skill in. Leaping backwards from the slash to remove myself from the range of my foe, I lunges forward again when the blade had passed in a fluid riposte to her blade arm in an attempted Shiim. The purpose of this attack was to exploit the sheer speed at which it had come with the aim to not allowing her to have time to avoid such a strike. In this it was not successful but the blade was not able to be parried.
Instead my master dropped lower, dodging the blow as it passed over her and lashing out at my legs with her blade. I managed to dodge backwards again breaking form to avoid this but this was followed quickly with a strike to my chest with her foot as I recharged in, pushing off from me to perform a back-flip. This was poor and I should have sensed such a blow coming. To compensate for this, I decided to seize the offensive with a series of three offensive strikes. The first vertical, then diagonal and then horizontal to her left side.
From this however, I left my lower body open to a tripping attempt as Mitina's foot made contact with my own aiming to hook her ankle into mine and force me off my feet. Successful in her efforts, I was forced into a gymnastic escape, again breaking the fundamentals of form V in order to remain in the fight. I think this could have been avoided with further augmentation of my leg, to endure the unarmored blow with the armored and cybernetic leg. Regardless, my follow up to this was a stab forward into center mass after I regained my footing. The intention being to return to the offensive. Unfortunately this was ducked as well and followed up again with a kick to the chest to force me back. In hindsight, if I could have forced her to perform the same gesture a third time, I could have maybe caught a leg and used that to press for the win but as you will see bellow I came up with an alternative plan.
Until this spar, I had never fought Jar'Kai before and knowing that my master had some skill in it, I goaded her into using the twin bladed style. This seems like a foolish idea, but there was reason behind it. Juyo has a weakness to force based attacks, due to the practitioner needing to immerse themselves in the force. Jar'kai requires more attention to be focused upon than singled bladed combat as two blades need to be tracked. These two factors plus the addition that my master had not yet raised a force barrier provided me a slim opportunity for victory.
At once she attacked me, a pincer movement with two blades as she aimed to exploit the fact I only had one. To compensate for this factor, I had previously determined that my style needed to become completely defensive until an opportunity came to strike at her with the force. The high blade I dodged to one side and the lower I blocked against in the hope that disrupting one and not the other would falter her rhythm (a factor I suspect is involved in Jar'Kai to help mitigate the need for as much thought while doing so.).
Assuming a defensive stance, I waited for a second onslaught which did not take long to materialize. This did not take long. A series of two non-simultaneous attacks, aiming a blade lock before a second disengaged and slashed at my stomach. This is not a factor I had considered in my theory of Jar'kai and the blade tore into my side. In pain I realized my mistake and knew the time to attack was now or never. As instructed by Mitina previously, I lashed out with a force wound, attempting to constrict her body with the force and cause injury. To my surprise this hit and I felt the darkside flow through me as I bound her in the force.
She lashed out again and with much greater fury, not attempting to resist the wound so much as break my focus and force the telekinetic attack to end. Wounded and weakened, I knew I was no match for her in blade combat so I dodged backwards and out of the range of the blow. Here I made the fatal mistake however. In channeling my passions solely to the single attack, knowing it was my only hope to defeat her now, I neglected my own defenses in the force. I confess I do not remember much of what came next. A sudden sense of movement, a painful blow to the head and I was on the other side of the room, bleeding and with my master standing over me. It appears to have been a force push with some violence behind it.
Analysis and Conclusions
In the aftermath, I have had some time to think upon this and feel that while this was not a failure on my part as I have labeled my previous significant spars, there is clear room for improvement. I have detailed my thoughts below:
  • First and foremost is the advice of my master. "I should not rely upon force powers when my foe has control of the situation". I am no Sorcerer and my talent with the force pales next to my talent with a blade. Though desperate in this situation, I should have pressed on with my defensive strikes to wear her down.
  • I should have a barrier at all times during combat against force users. Maybe obvious, maybe not, but there are many here gifted in the force and I have been rag-dolled by several of them when I have not raised a sufficient barrier.

In addition, my previous goals from previous spars still stand. Only through passion will I gain strength and through strength power. All other goals are a means to an end. From these goals, I will structure my independent training further and from this I will grow and become more powerful.

Glory to the Empire.

Ongoing Crisis
War in the Northern Territories

The Balance of Power in the Northern Territories!

"The Northern Territories shift under the weight of changing times. With the passage of the ICOT, internal strife amongst Imperial Forces in the North has lessened - though never abated. Although the momentum of the Republic has not yet been met entirely, fortification efforts and victorious naval campaigns have evened the footing at least slightly. Eyes align on systems such as Vykos, Nam'ta and Orsus to see how this proceeds.."

((OOC: The Balance of Power system has begun! Missions that relate to grand changes in the Northern Territories will have an impact on the balance of power shown above, with the end result being that the balance of power's state at the start of the next war arc will determine how strong the Republic will be in the area. The balance of power can be pushing in our favour with bigger scale events aimed at taking the Republic down or fortifying ourselves in the North. This can be achieved through Operations, Adventures and Guild Events. The blue represents the Republic, and the Empire is red! This is organised by the Guild Team, so please direct OOC questions to them.))
