What is Escalation?

#1
What happens when characters might hurt one another?

How does it happen? Our characters will fight and compete, it is part and parcel with the darker RP we choose and so cannot be avoided. However, RPing in constant fear that everyone who walks past could impale your character and end your story is an incredibly anxious thing and can ruin your enjoyment. So, what often happens is people talk OOCly, agreeing to the highest level of harm that can be a consequence. In such a situation, fantastic! With an agreed level of harm you can work to there is no need to think about escalation.

Yet, sometimes the pair cannot agree and so we are left with a heated scenario over characters and nobody being able to agree to which level of harm is the ceiling. In this scenario someone can apply (by simply asking an officer or sub-officer) for escalation where the limit of harm is set to those involved by the guild. This is then followed by providing a list of the IC reasons behind why a character might want to harm the other, the officer/sub-officer will then examine the reasons and make a judgement on how high the ceiling is on consequences.

The need to apply for escalation starts when your character is attempting to bring harm upon another at the level of MAIMING. This can either be done personally, or through telling another character to do so. The definition of maiming, in regards to the guild’s stance, is the permanent loss of a physical attribute from the pinky toe up to an entire leg.  If, after you've politely (with regards to RP etiquette) whispered them about the intentions of your character and  they disagree with the current course but you strongly feel this is how your character would act, then this is the point in time where you would apply for escalation with an officer/sub-officer. Anything lower than maiming whereby injuries can heal (e.g broken bones, heavy beat down, scarring etc) does not require officer/sub-officer approval, just good old fashioned communication between the roleplayers involved. Even if a chat isn’t necessary, we'd prefer if you all had great communication as this builds the strongest foundation for good roleplay and a good community attitude. It is expected for players issuing orders for maiming or killing to have already gone through the consent and potentially escalation process before the order is even given ICly.

The characters will then both be liable to the same level of consequence until the escalation is resolved. Speaking of resolution...

Does escalation ever end? Yes! The whole process of harming other characters has, as you can see, been filled with lots of OOC conversation. Escalation ends once the two parties agree to a resolution to their issues. That can be positively or negatively. For example, if the two characters have a lovely picnic and become friends, thus forgetting their differences, and so the escalation ends. If violence takes place then that is what happens, but of course this can then - in the future - be taken into account when someone else is applying for escalation.

Ongoing Crisis
The Republic Marches amongst lit fires!

The Balance of Power in the Northern Territories!

After the Republic liberated Pollus from Imperial influence, Anx Minor was devastated by I.T.E.C.’s nuclear mining and lingering Sith presence, while the Kesmere Ridge remained largely intact, enabling the Republic to steadily infiltrate and influence its powerful corporate systems. On Tertiary Kesmere—the largest hub—three megacorporations dominated: Oriyn Prospecting discovered resources, Kessdyne Resource Group extracted and profited from the capital Vethar’s Reach and its Ciivic Council, and Haeltor Maritime handled off-world transport. Beneath the façade of economic growth, however, The Republic secretly aimed to turn Tertiary Kesmere into a strategic launch point for operations in the Northern Territories. Contacted by Moff Vayen Korr, the Marshalling Prefect of the Northern Territories, the Pentarchy of House Horuset took on the job of delaying the Republic's actions. With preperations laid it culminated in a strike planetside lasting only two weeks to ignite anarchy. Acting covertly to sabotage Republic progress, they destabilized the region, leaving chaos in their wake as corporations collapsed under their own deception and local anti-corporate guilds rose up—unaware of the Empire’s hidden hand behind the unrest...

((OOC: Missions that relate to grand changes in the Northern Territories will have an impact on the balance of power shown above, with the end result being that the balance of power's state will determine how strong the Republic will be in given areas area. The balance of power can be pushing in our favour with bigger scale events aimed at taking the Republic down or fortifying ourselves in the North. This can be achieved through Operations, Adventures and Guild Events. The blue represents the Republic, and the Empire is red! This is organised by the Guild Team, so please direct OOC questions to them.))
