Telekinesis on the Battlefield

The following report is a summary notation of the matter discussed in Sith Sarias’ lesson on telekinesis in warfare. It is categorised by topic and personal comment and insight is provided in sub-script.

The overall topic concerned recent battlefield encounters and how telekinesis could aid in overcoming common enemy strategies and weaponry. The discussion could roughly be divided into two broad topics: Counteracting enemy firearms and counteracting enemy personal ordinance. For clarity within this report references to Telekinesis are intended to indicate the very basic ability to move objects through the Force, other powers generally recognised to be within the category of Telekinesis will be referred to by their specific designations.

Counteracting firearms.

The discussion in this part of the lesson centred around the use of telekinesis to counteract specific types of enemy firearms. Specific attention was given to the Scattergun, a type of firearm that launches a cluster of physical projectiles. This weapon has seen effective use in trench warfare because of its effectiveness at close range and in narrow spaces, where the spread of the projectiles matters less. To approach such a weapon across an open field one might think to utilize mobility and speed. Though this may make targeting more difficult, a weapon that outputs large amounts of inaccurate firepower still has a significant chance of landing a hit by sheer volume of fire. Rather, utilizing the surroundings is the more effective method; to take an object from the environment – be it a body, wreckage or naturally occurring objects – and use it to shield oneself from the enemy’s fire as one approaches. The object can then be used for offensive purposes, to stagger or crush the enemy.

N1: The use of different types of cover is useful for various types of weaponry. One might adjust the size and type of cover based on the type of weaponry is employed against them. With standard blaster rifles a simple sheet of metal is plenty, even of small size as such blaster-fire is generally relatively inaccurate, banking on weight of fire rather than accuracy. However, when one is facing a weapon with high accuracy, one might consider using smaller pieces of protecting material to cover vital areas, and to layer together. Finally, against heavy blasters a boulder can have an interesting effect. If one’s telekinetic grasp is broad enough, one might control the shattering shrapnel of the rock to turn against the enemy.

The next subject was the standard blaster rifle. Though many will consider them mundane, uncivilised and crude, there is a reason for their ambivalence in military forces galaxy-wide. They are remarkably effective when utilised en-masse which is the most common application of the weapon we’ve seen during this campaign. Additionally, us acolytes have no meaningful way of defending against them, as even Vibroblades are dangerously volatile when they meet plasma bolts. As such, it should be our objective to disrupt the enemy battle line as much as possible. Options in this case are telekinetically placing obstacles in front of them, trying to disrupt the formation by launching objects into it, and using either Force Push or Force Pull to disrupt the structure of the formation, creating momentary and localised pauses in enemy fire that may be exploited for various tactical purposes.

N2: Mention was made of the demoralizing effect of using enemy corpses for these purposes. The psychological effect of such strategies cannot be understated, and in any battlefield worthy of the Sith enemy corpses are a plentiful resource to utilise. This also came up in the discussion of counteracting massed riflemen, when going over methods to obstruct an approaching battle line.

N3: It should be noted that what objects are thrown at enemy lines should be thoroughly considered, as it is entirely possible to thoughtlessly provide the enemy with cover through your actions.

Counteracting Grenades. (Personal ordinance).

In the discussion of how to handle grenades with telekinesis the answer appears straight-forward: One catches it with the Force and returns to sender, so to say. However, in practice it isn’t quite that simple. First there is the matter of the type of grenade. Discussion brought up four main types. These are, in order of commonality: Fragmentation grenades, Thermal detonators, smoke grenades and  flash-bang/concussion grenades. All these various grenades have two factors in common: They have to be thrown and they have a set fuse. Beyond that, the functions of the grenades are quite different. Fragmentation grenades are anti-personnel, scattering shrapnel in a wide area to wound and disable. Thermal detonators atomize anything withing their effective radius. Smoke grenades are generally used to cover movement, whether advancing or retreating, and flashbang/concussion grenades are for crowd control, intended to affect the target’s senses and render them less capable. Shield generators, vibroswords, droids, even vehicles may be damaged by these weapons. The EMP and Fragmentation grenades, as well as the Thermal Detonators, one would always seek to send back to the enemy. A smoke grenade depends heavily upon the context, but in general throwing them down-wind is most effective against their intended purpose of obstructing sight-lines. Do be aware of allied positions, that you do not unnecessarily obstruct their line of sight. Alternatively, it may be thrown back into enemy lines to obstruct their sightlines. Finally, flashbang/concussion grenades are best simply turned away. Even if one could return them to the enemy line, its effectiveness could well be questionable, so simply rendering it ineffective is the primary intent. In all situations, be careful if a Jedi is with the enemy as everything mentioned above can be employed by the Ancient Enemy, and make your efforts that much more difficult. Luckily, they are cowardly and weak, and will likely attempt to avoid lethally redirecting any sort of harm.

N4: I would additionally mention one more type of grenade: Namely the EMP grenade. Though less common than other types, it is remarkably dangerous for those without the insulating armour of our troops, or the well-developed battery packs. Vibroswords are susceptible, and will cease their electronic function when caught in the radius of the blast.

N5: If one witnesses coloured smoke grenades being deployed, keep an eye where they are intended to go. Such markers are often used for aerial assaults, and returning a coloured smoke grenade to the enemy line will redirect these often devastating attacks back on them.

Finally, mention should be made of the process known among military personnel as ‘cooking’ a grenade. This is the process of triggering the grenade’s fuse and holding onto the grenade before throwing, with the intention of shortening the time between throwing and detonation. The purpose of this is precisely to prevent targets from getting away and to prevent it being thrown back. Therefore one is well-served to keep it away from allied lines at any cost, as catching it too late or allowing it to get too close may still see the grenade having its intended effect.

Ongoing Crisis
War in the Northern Territories

The Balance of Power in the Northern Territories!

"The Northern Territories shift under the weight of changing times. With the passage of the ICOT, internal strife amongst Imperial Forces in the North has lessened - though never abated. Although the momentum of the Republic has not yet been met entirely, fortification efforts and victorious naval campaigns have evened the footing at least slightly. Eyes align on systems such as Vykos, Nam'ta and Orsus to see how this proceeds.."

((OOC: The Balance of Power system has begun! Missions that relate to grand changes in the Northern Territories will have an impact on the balance of power shown above, with the end result being that the balance of power's state at the start of the next war arc will determine how strong the Republic will be in the area. The balance of power can be pushing in our favour with bigger scale events aimed at taking the Republic down or fortifying ourselves in the North. This can be achieved through Operations, Adventures and Guild Events. The blue represents the Republic, and the Empire is red! This is organised by the Guild Team, so please direct OOC questions to them.))
