How to Combat

#1
Basics in Combat
Preperation for Battle

As an individual Soldier you will do a combat control before you go to battle. You will ensure that the following criterias are met.
  • Your weapons are functional.
  • Ensure your optics are on.
  • Load up on ammunition and gas.
  • Ensure Vehicles are combat ready.
  • Test communications equipment.
  • Account all the medical equipment.
  • That your uniform is sealed and adapted.
  • You have everything necessary with you.
  • Your water bottle is full.
  • Empty bladder and gutt.
  • Grenades are armed and ready.

Report to your Squad Leader once you're ready. Ensure that you spread the information he has given you to ensure everyone has the same idea of the mission and to prevent rumours to spread. Take the time to help a comrade and double check your own equipment.

Skirmish Team

A Skirmish team is the smallest unit where Fire and Movement can be coordinated. You and one friend form by rule of thumb a Skirmish Team. That mean that you independantly or with a squad defend or support eachother, especially in combat. If one of you is injured it's up to the other buddy to pull the injured away into cover and defend him while beginning the process of first aid. A chief will always be assigned in the Skirmish Team.

It is a tradition for the Skirmish team buddies to tell each others families in case of a casualty.

A well practised Skirmish Team has the potential to be more effective than 4 uncoordinated soldiers.

Squad Combat

A Squad fight in a manner where the entire Squads fire is gathered on one position and one opposition. The Squad Leader lead the fire to its maximal potential.

Combining the firepower to one position will ensure that the Squad recieve the initiative and can neutralize Vehicles and Personnel.

The Squad Leader decide:
  • When to open fire.
  • For how long you will fire.
  • Between what time to open fire.
  • From where the Fire will be opened.
  • How much ammunition you will spend.
  • When to seize fire.

Priorities

Neutralize firstly:
  1. Opposition that are in your way.
  2. Opposition that advance.
  3. The most Deadly opposition. Support Weapons, Combat Vehicles, e g.
  4. Most visible Targets.
  5. Oppositions Leadership.
  6. Drivers

Opening Fire

Open fire when the opposition is far from cover. The closer you are the more accurate will your shots be. Yet he may not get close enough to throw grenades at you. Usually the most practical range of our anti-tank weapons that decide when we can open fire. Be conservative with your ammunition, you may fire at longer distances if your task is to supress the opposition and hinder their movement.

The goal is to open fire with as many weapons as possible at the same time.

Naturally you will always open fire on the target that is "Infront" of you in the oppositions formation. To then support your Squads targets.

Firing Above Friendlies

To fire above firnedly personnel, in this case a squad who is moving forward, you have to ensure that you have elevation above them - Preferebly at least two meters above their height.

In case of Casualties

If the squad is advancing during combat it's the Combat Medics or the units to the rear to ensure the well-being of the injured. The Squad presses on to not cancel the assault and give the opposition the opportunity to regroup and counter-attack. Friendly Casualties will always be taken care of even if you have to reconquer terrain to support them.

If you capture injured opposition it's up to the Squad Leader to organize medical care with the Platoon leader and seizement of POW. You will prioritize treatment of our own yet treat the opposition as equals.

In case of Surrender

If the opposition Surrender during the Assault, guard them until reserves have reached your squad.

Disarm the opposition and bring them to safety and await Military Police to transport them to our rear lines. Ensure they're taken care of as if they were our equals. Have your skirmish team buddy protect you when you disarm and communicate with the prisoner.

After the Battle

Do the following steps:
  • Set up posts to ensure it's defendable.
  • Send messages to Platoon staff and organize the coordination of the seizement.
  • If the Squad Leader is a casualty, assume command if noone else is.
  • Help the injured, take them to cover and support them with first aid. Request Medical Transport.
  • Split the Ammunition for everyone to take.
  • Control weapons and yourself.
  • Improve your Firing Position.
  • Eat and drink within your skirmish team.
  • Be ready for battle!
Combat Formations
Platoon Formations

The Squads usually advance with its platoon, where the Platoon Leader decide the readiness of the platoon depending on:
  • The task
  • How fast the Platoon Has to move
  • Risk for Contact
  • The terrain

Distances on how much area has to be covered and the gaps between Squads can be changed and adjusted by the Platoon Leader.

Squad Formations

The squad march in their own independant formation depending on where they are in the Platoon Formation and their risk for contact.

Single-File
[Image: Single_file.jpg]

Advancement is done by everyone following the same steps. This formation is usually done through more gritty terrain when the squad has to move quickly. Readiness to the sides are incredibly well but lack firepower to the front. A pointman may be assigned ahead of the squad.

Staggered File
[Image: Staggered_File_1.jpg]

Movement is done like in a Single-file except there's more coordination between the Squad members and one more rifle on point. This formation is decent to move through tough terrain and there's less effective firepower to the sides due to the spacing.
A pointman may be assigned ahead of the squad.

Wedge
[Image: dvfvoy.jpg]

The wedge has characteristics from a single-file and Line in the manner that it's rather quick, has firepower to the sides AND the front. The wedge is used when the direction of contact is unknown.

Firing Line
[Image: Firing_Line.jpg]

This formation gives maximal fire-power straight forward. It gives minimal fire support to the sides. This formation require coordination and active leadership due to the limited movement speed and safety risks.

Contact

Contact can happen in 3 Situations:
Preset - We spot the opposition, they havn't spotted us.
Postset - The opposition have spotted us, we havn't spotted them.
Duel - We spot eachother at the same time.

Contact have happen in different ways. When your squad make contact you could be oblivious and hear bullets come towards you - Making you think it's a postset. Yet your friend might have spotted the opposition and opened fire, which puts him in a duel. This happen in a matter of seconds.

Actions in Preset
  1. Take a lower stance.
  2. Observe the opposition.
  3. Open fire on Squad Leaders order or Self Defense.

Actions in Postset
  1. Hit the deck for cover.
  2. Return fire and call out oppositions location.
  3. Conceal yourself with Smoke.
  4. Act on Squad Leaders orders.

Actions in a Duel
  1. Open fire - take initiative.
  2. Call out the oppositions location.
  3. Let Squad Leader Lead the fight.

Note: In your formation, try and always get into better cover within your spot of the line.
Combat Techniques
Offensive Combat

Combat on the Offensive is done through the Squad, Fire Teams, Skirmish Team and individual Soldier coordination to through fire and movement take terrain and thereby neutralize the opposition.

The goal is to weaken the opposition until there can be a breakthrough.

Combat is done through:
  • Support, fire from another squad or Support elements to improve the opportunity for movement.
  • Movement through undefended terrain.
  • Breakthrough against a lesser enemy.
  • Close Quarter for Seizement.

Remember:
  1. You have to want to neutralize the opposition. Never underestimate the opposition. Don't underestimate yourself.
  2. Let the bolts and grenade do its job. The bolt and grenade is faster than the artillery and you can not hesitate to force yourself into a melee if there's no time to reload or your weapon breaks to defend yourself.
  3. Take all opportunity for cover.
  4. Use the cover you recieve yet use your rifle as your finest cover. It is your life-insurance.
  5. Surprise, quickly use the opportunity recklessly whenever the opposition give you the chance. Yet don't let yourself get surprised. To surprise the opposition and avoid being surprised you have to be alert.
  6. Be ready to quickly move to your own defense. They opposition isn't lying still to let you end them and take their objective.
  7. Ensure coordination from Skirmish Team to Fire Team to Squad to Platoon to win.
  8. Keep the missions goal in mind. In the heat of battle it's easy to lose orientation.
  9. When you attack you should be aggresive in a controlled mannet, make decisions and be swift. It's your or the oppositions life.

When the Squad has taken the attack point it's important to quickly act so the conquered terrain can be of use to eventually fight the opposition once again. Be ready to support or advance - Most importantly, be ready for a counter-assault.

Combat Position

Combat from a Combat Position is done to neutralise the opposition or to support another squad. A Combat Position can also be used to defend a location. When the squad has attacked and taken the terrain it's important to quickly assign a Combat position to engage the retreating opposition and continue the fight.

The goal from a Combat Position is to collect as much firepower as possible to one area.

A perfect Combat Position & Firing Position have:
  • Cover to the Front.
  • Cover to the flank.
  • Defendable Firing range
  • Free line of sight.
  • Cover from above such as trees.
  • Aerial Cover.
  • Easy terrain to reinforce.
  • Free passage of retreat.
Combat Methods
The most important task about the battle is to win the firefight, by enforcing fire superiority before any movement begin.

Fire superiority is done and maintained by as many weapons as possible firing at the same time against the same group of enemies while the Squad and the individual Soldier act aggresivly.

For the individual Soldier it's the following:
  • Hold your spot in the formation.
  • Follow the Squad Leaders commands and act.
  • Repeat Commands and signs to ensure everyone understood.
  • Open fire is done in self defense or Squad Leaders order. If you can't see the opposition, follow a friends tracer to supress.

Fire and Move Forward & Rearwards
[Image: giphy.gif]
This method is done to take the terrain from the opposition. Half the squad try and kill them while the other move up to try and kill them better.

The method is to Storm the opposition for a breakthrough in the oppositions Platoon and Company Lines.

Fire Shock

As the name says you Shock the opposition with firepower. It is done with the entire unit at opposition with lesser firepower. Lesser firepower could be that you've already neutralized a lot of the oppositions squad members or you simply made contact with this weaker unit in general.

Step by step you are to:

  1. First recieve the order to be in a line.
  2. On command "Fire Shock!" Fire 10 Bolts in quick succesion. Use full auto depending on range.
  3. On command "Move!" sprint 5-10 meters ahead, unsecure your weapon and open fire again.
  4. On command "On March!" you march forward in a line ready to shock the opposition again.
  5. On command "Firing positions" return to Fire and Move with Fire Teams.

Fire Shock can be done in the opposite direction to supress the opposition when your retreat, usually in a postset to supress the advancing opposition and keep your distance. It is for the Squad Leader to decide wether you can take the initiative and win the firefight.

Envelopment
Envelopment is done when the terrain allow for an attack on the flank. The advantages of an attack on the flank is that often can support a movement over a longer duration while getting close to the oppositions lines with a surprise attack.

Envelopment within a platoon may only be done if it allows in the Platoon Leaders combat plan, the tactical opportunities on the sides may already be adopted by friendly squads. The risk for friendly fire is far to high.

Envelopment is done by:
  • Squad leader assign a bait team to fire from a Combat Position.
  • Squad Leader assign a fireteam on an envelopment route to be followed and orders on how to neutralize. Flares or other communication means will be assigned. Example is a red flare that the envelopment can't win the firefight. Yellow flare mean they're struggling and could need the bait team to advance. Green flare mean the opposition is easily neutralised. Communicate when Fire teams split off.
  • Squad Leader has to assign Shoot barriers, example "Bait team, don't fire to the left of the big rotten oak" to avoid friendly fire.

Zipper
The most effect way to break through combat is to zipper out of there. This can be done after you've ambushed the opposition and need to get away while causing damage. The rule is to always zipper in the direction that you're secure. Aka the way you came from or a secure retreat point.
  • During a Zipper you will fire in a much more higher rate than generally to force the opposition down as much as possible.
  • The Opposition will think that there's more of you without acknowledging the movement to their side.
  • Once break off is done, Squad Leader will decide wether you can win the firefight or not.

Alley Movement

The tight-spaces version of a Zipper. The alley maneuver is executed when the highest fire rate ahead possible is a Staggered formation without exposing the gaps in a line formation. This method is a quick way to retreat where maneuveres are limited.

A scenario where you may have to call for an Alley Movement is when you're on a road with dense bushes or trees on the side of the road making it impossible to form a Line, or if you're in in a town.

  • The First two men in the Staggered formation or double column open fire and assign targets.
  • The Second two make ready to open fire.
  • The third row can prepare smoke grenades if so requires.
  • The fourth row check safety rearwards.
  • The first two Sprint rearwards as the Second line open fire.
  • The Second line sprint rearward as the third line open fire.

    OOC
These are the most basic forms of Combat you can conduct. All factions would most likely have some form of this guide IC!
If you have the right "tacticool" words for a formation or just anything in general, please tell me!

Ongoing Crisis
War in the Northern Territories

The Balance of Power in the Northern Territories!

"The Northern Territories shift under the weight of changing times. With the passage of the ICOT, internal strife amongst Imperial Forces in the North has lessened - though never abated. Although the momentum of the Republic has not yet been met entirely, fortification efforts and victorious naval campaigns have evened the footing at least slightly. Eyes align on systems such as Vykos, Nam'ta and Orsus to see how this proceeds.."

((OOC: The Balance of Power system has begun! Missions that relate to grand changes in the Northern Territories will have an impact on the balance of power shown above, with the end result being that the balance of power's state at the start of the next war arc will determine how strong the Republic will be in the area. The balance of power can be pushing in our favour with bigger scale events aimed at taking the Republic down or fortifying ourselves in the North. This can be achieved through Operations, Adventures and Guild Events. The blue represents the Republic, and the Empire is red! This is organised by the Guild Team, so please direct OOC questions to them.))
