Legacy is often made a paramount principle for the Sith species as a whole. However, this axiom is based on the opinion that only the pure-blooded red Sith make up the true Sith order. Whilst an admirable and desired state of being, it is false to assume that is the current state of affairs and so the Holocron has developed a new purpose in the Sith. One that, perhaps, is more important than the simple task of protecting history but rather is for the teaching and enlightening of the later heirs to the Sith who need the guidance of those that come before. However, before we explore the philosophy of the purpose of the Holocron, we must explore what they do in a literal sense and also how to build one.
The Holocron is, among other things, primarily an archive. Vast amounts of information that can, in some cases, dwarf the huge collections of archives that private collections fill halls with. Each Holocron is capable of almost limitless storage and is done so in a way impossible to hack or bypass via traditional electronic means. Even being a non-sensitive to the force would leave one incapable of accessing the data held within, apt considering their natural inferiority. However, just being a force-sensitive does not guarantee access to a Holocron. All have a guardian, or ‘Gatekeeper’, which acts as a guide to the information stored within as well as guarding it from those considered unworthy. However, not all holocron are still active with their Gatekeeper and so as they have fallen silent, so too is the information within lost to us.
To find those that are still active the only path that remains is to try and access them, which can be considered relatively simple. A Holocron is a device of the force and by connecting with it, and willing it's centre to open to you will summon the Gatekeeper. Although everything is easier said than done, accessing a Holocron is still relatively simple if the situation is willing. It is known that certain holocrons remain inactive due to other extenuating circumstances but those are the minority, not the majority. Once contact has been made the Gatekeeper will reveal itself. Most normally take the form of a small holographic construction of the builder at a handheld size.
The Gatekeeper is the final form of the builder and, whilst not an actual part of the creator, it is an imprint of their being and holds their personality as closely as anything possibly could. One must remember this when conversing with a gatekeeper as they can have very limited answers on certain subjects if the Holocron was not expanded there greatly. A Gatekeeper should be dealt with as if dealing with the actual person, as the answers you get will be in the same manner, with the Gatekeeper responding to your inquiries. There is no list or catalogue of what a gatekeeper has access to and very many will not be able to answer a question on what they know. Your inquisitive mind will have to go piece by piece through everything you can think of and expand from there.
This means that going through a Holocron in full almost certainly takes months of careful meditation and interaction without a break. If breaks are taken that time will expand. The myth that a Holocron ‘downloads’ information to the user is just that, a myth, the information will always need to be gone through manually and taken in as if reading a book or watching a holovid. However what a Holocron is able to do is better express a lesson or teaching, the intricacies of a state of mind and emotional being can be felt in the lessons and so do not need to be examined with inferior terms of language.
Not all holocrons can be so forthcoming of course, much of the knowledge trapped can be of extreme value and so gatekeepers sometimes have failsafe built-in. One such failsafe is a block. If the Gatekeeper senses the user to be unworthy if the information it might refuse to release it. Another is that the Gatekeeper will test the user and if they fail the test the Holocron will lock to them. These are possible to bypass however doing so comes with huge risk of entirely losing your mind. It is not to be undertaken by anybody who has not studied the techniques and art of Holocron construction extensively. Other holocrons have a Gatekeeper that waits in dormant silence as the creator willed their information to an heir that they judged worthy. With all these extra steps a short use of a Holocron can extend into the life's work of Sith who wish to only access one piece of information.
The study of using a Holocron is intrinsically linked to the study of making one and the art of doing so is a valuable one, if not incredibly secretive. What it is though is personal. Sith holocrons normally take the shape of a four-sided pyramid. The edges of which are normally an ornate metal. Each face is then made of a range of materials such as glass, metal or stone. But whatever is used they are needed to be polished down to a flat surface as sith hieroglyphics are necessary to focus the energy of the Holocron up to the pinnacle of the Holocron. This pinnacle is the capstone, made of either metal or stone it houses the Gatekeeper and is vital for a Holocron to be accessible.
The inner workings of a Holocron are markedly different. Minute complex lattices and interwoven strands of crystal are strung and adjusted with extreme precision to store the data inside. Whilst an incredibly delicate hand is needed when setting these strands, as many can fracture and disintegrate at the slightest of sudden movements, they become oddly resistant when the Holocron is complete. To this point physical construction can be incredibly finicky and rushing this process or setting it incorrectly can cause the entire Holocron to explode once the energy of the invocations is introduced.
Before the full physical construction can be begun by though one must complete the rite of commencement. This will trap the cognitive structure of the Gatekeeper within the capstone. Not doing so will result in it degrading beyond use before the Holocron can be finished correctly and will cause a builder to fail every time. It is through this Gatekeeper that not only information is accessed, but also that it is stored and without a gatekeeper, no information could be stored at all. A Holocron without a Gatekeeper at construction is simply an ornate box. Future entries to this datafile will elaborate on the exact symbology needed as well as the steps in invoking the power of the Holocron as well as the rites of commencement.
