Since coming aboard the Th'asidra, I have considered keeping a log of my thoughts to properly express and archive my experiences. Perhaps few would even take a moment to read the musings of an acolyte but I endeavour none the less. I was pressed to begin this log by Apprentice Aljo, for whom the first entry in this pseudo-diary will be written. I am grateful in many ways to her for pushing me to begin these rambling entries, although this may not have been her intent, it will serve as a proper narrative of my training and progress.
One evening in the training chambers she happened upon me striking at a droid clumsily without proper use of Form I: Shii-Cho, the fundamental stance adhered to by acolytes. It was somewhat embarrassing to be metaphorically prostrated as such, thank goodness my peers weren't around to see it. Maybe that's why I'm really compelled to write this now, to admit my shame, to let them see. We discussed the nature of the forms, but in true fashion, my curiosity was met with simple ultimatum: that Form I should be the first and only thing on my mind until perfected. She looked at me with that oh-so-typical expression of personal disdain and disgust, like the child who steals from his father's liquor cabinet, only to find him staring at you from the doorway. That's how I felt stood there: a child being disciplined. We parted after the assignment was given and I have been considering our conversation since.
How was I to approach the task set before me: to display a proper understanding and respect for Form I? I decided upon trying to break away from the established material, those which merely recite the handbook of Shii-Cho, describing it's technique in minute detail and frankly requiring the patience of Jedi to overcome in full. My goal in this entry will not be to repeat the well established classical literature on the subject, but rather offer my own philosophy towards the Form.
In all studies and philosophies of Form I that I have come across, one word stands out and holds its own at the fore the subject: Simplicity. This word will form the basis of this entry and serve to develop my narrative on Shii-Cho. One can say little else for this form but for its simplicity in style, its movement and its uses. Built as the foundation from whence all others came, the Shii-Cho form serves as the perfect wild card, it is unpredictable, it is bold and uncompromising. I admit in such simplicity one finds it difficult to properly express the extent of the uses to Shii-Cho. Upon my reading of the subject experts and philosophers of the Sith speak volumes on necessity of Shii-Cho, it's meaning as a foundation to all others, it's focus on blade-work specifically and how one must aim to strike and guard against their opponents. Some have gone so far in praising Shii-Cho to describe it as a conduit in which a pure expression of rage can be unleashed. Shii-Cho in its semi-undisciplined practice allows a Sith to adapt style, footwork and aggression when in combat to a phenomenal degree, be they against a Jedi, Sith or quite simply anything else.
One particular aspect of Shii-cho that brought a smile to my face was the Sarlacc Sweep, a wide and brutal swipe of the weapon to strike multiple enemies surrounding the user. I appreciate the purity of hatred on must have to seek absolute and sudden destruction of ones enemies in such a brazen method, like poetry in motion. It amuses me to imagine that the opportunity will come quickly in the upcoming trials to practice this technique in the field, one I look forward to.
As I consider this, I am pressed to discuss the practice of the many strikes and blocks of Shii-Cho. The images of this technique display a strong adherence to strict body positioning, perfect angles designed to strike precisely against one of the specific zones of attack. In reality and practice I have been trying to mimic these actions in live combat yet technique breaks down to necessity in these situations. In short, it is far harder to maintain perfect technique when your life is in jeopardy. The angles become obscured as one contorts their body to dodge a blaster bolt or an opponent's blade. While I have had little practice of the velocities of Shii-Cho, I intend to carry such drills out to both improve reflex and gain a deeper understanding of how to face an opponent with technique in combat.
That being said, the Shii-Cho form appears to be a fantastic choice for combat on the open field, simple to jump in to a horde of enemies and just start cleaving.
But I must consider, does this make the lowly acolyte who must learn this form first and foremost a simple foot-soldier, learning to fight on the battlefield before he must face his fellow acolytes or, by some random chance, a Jedi opponent? I do not believe it so. The form shows promise even to the highest level and i'm sure there are true lords of the dark side who may even favour this form for its focus on adaptability and pragmatism over style. Yet much of this focuses on bladework and skill with the saber. One wonders if there are ways to properly incorporate the use of force techniques into combat with efficient technique and discipline rather on an ad hoc basis. Perhaps in time I will learn such things. My mind wanders...
