Apprentice Johran Hass: How to determine potential.
Some of the poisons and artifacts of creatures in my possession are rare and one of a kind. However I do not possess any material that would be considered worthless trinkets by most. Before one searches for the right materials and creatures one must know what to look out for and how dangerous it is to yourself to obtain it.
Criteria of usefulness
If one of these four criteria are met i consider collecting further samples. The first, third and last have the potential to seriously enhance your own knowledge on alchemy and therefore take priority of the second. However the second one could be interconnected with the third criteria, i have personally seen this happen before.
Determined searching of a particular specimen
There are many creatures out there in the galaxy that possess rare and interesting abilities on their own and I have collected a few of those, but only one I was aware of before collecting it. If you are aware of a creature that has something unique about it, that can be weaponized or used for your own advantage. One has to set out a search for these creatures. The easiest way is to study their behavior, danger levels and natural prey. I have stalked a creature in the Kaas jungles for two days until finally killing it, for I wouldn't have survived the sting. I studied it’s behavior, movement pattern and what it reacted to thoroughly. This is the only way to obtain a dangerous creature at low risk to yourself, but only if you know that the result will be worth the time.
Apprentice Wradaii’s contribution: How to prioritise
Many seek to earn favour with the Sith and apprentices involved in managing the bestiary by providing new specimens to be added to its ever-fluctuating population. Some have found that thoughtlessly providing any old creature will end in reprimand and possibly punishment. The bestiary isn’t a zoological exhibit. It is a collection of creatures that are useful to the powerbase in some manner. What follows is to be a guide for any aspiring contributor to the bestiary.
Initial consideration goes out to the nature of the creature itself. A creature of exceptional strength that could potentially serve as a war-beast is often the first one thinks off, but those with poisons or venoms in their biology may be equally valued. Other traits of note include an affinity to the Force or specialised abilities. If the specimen can be of use in ongoing projects, it should be given priority over new inclusions.
Should it possess none of the above qualities, there are still various roles it could fulfil in the bestiary. Their potential to be further developed into more fearsome or useful being is a factor of not little consideration. After all, Lord Sarias’ most commonly seen beasts are her Wingmaws, who were developed from a species considered a pest in its native world. There is also the consideration of value. Various species hold values to varying markets, and thus can be used to obtain resources and other specimens.
After all these considerations have been made and the specimen turns out to not possess specific qualities as mentioned, then the creature will be disposed off. It may be used as bait animals. If you capture specimens and know that this should be their fate, consider capturing multiples to provide a breeding population. I have personally been in this particular situation. Shyrack, though there are venomous subspecies, are a fairly common species on Korriban with few useful characteristics. However, they have great gene variety and potential for mutation and alteration. Hence I provided a breeding set and though they are not presently being used in experimentation, they serve as a living bait population for various actual species in the bestiary, notably the aforementioned wingmaws.
In conclusion, I strongly recommend against attempting wildly to provide any old creature with the rationale that anything may do. Give due consideration and do not waste the Bestiary caretaker’s time with worthless creatures.

- Any abilities that can be replicated.
- Toxicity.
- Alchemically created.
- Created through sophisticated sorcery.
